Mostly WordPress blogs are hacked mainly via brute force attack. In brute force attack, WordPress password is mainly guessed using “admin” as the username and random password. So one way to secure your WordPress blog is by changing the default username of your WordPress blog from admin to anything else which can’t be guessed with ease.
How to secure your WordPress blog by changing the default username?
Follow below steps to change username of your WordPress blog into something unique from the default username “admin”. You can change it into whatever you wish which can’t be guessed with ease. This way you can secure your WordPress blog from getting hacked:
Step 1: First of all, login into your cPanel. Then all you need to do is to find databases section in cPanel.
Step 2: There, click on phpMyAdmin. And a wizard will open where you can see all your databases.
Note: Every hosting provider has different stuffs for controlling the hosting account. Above methods are for cPanel based hosting. In above steps, basically all we did is reached till database section of where our blog’s database is stored.
Step 3: Now in database wizard click on the name of your blog. This way all tables present in that database will be shown.
Step 4: After selecting database, you will be able to see the list of all table present in your blog’s database in left sidebar below the database name. So click on “wp_users” this will open the main table containing the details of the users.
Step 5: Now you will be able to see details of all users belonging to your blog. Click on edit button in the row of the “admin” user. After this, you can edit the user details of the admin.
Step 6: Now delete value in “user_login” column and fill the value with username you wish to keep. It’s always better to change the username from admin to something which is not easily traceable. For example you can change the value of admin username from “admin” to anything like “john” or anything you wish.
