Impacts of Responsive Web Design on WordPress Themes

Considering the impact is to consider what the future holds for websites and responsive design. This article explores that idea along with explaining what a responsive website is and why you may want one. It also delves into the world of the very popular content management system program called WordPress.

WordPress Responsive Web Design

WordPress powers one of every six websites

The content management system program WordPress is the driving force behind one sixth of the world’s websites. It is an open source program, which means you may use it for free. It allows you to create website without having to write the HTML code yourself. It is not the only one of its kind but it is the most popular. Part of its popularity may be the fact that there are some themes/templates that are very easy to rank up through the search engine results pages.

What is responsive design?

It is tied to dynamic design in a way. It is a website that reacts to user input, but the input information is based on the screen size and device being used by the viewer. The website responds to the screen size that the viewer is using, which also means it takes signals from the type of device the viewer is using and the web browser that the viewer is using. A responsive design will change the way it looks so that it fits with the type of device being used, the screen size and even the browser (though with the browser it is in a more roundabout way).

The future and responsive design

It is very difficult to tell where the future is going to go with regards to responsive design. Common sense suggests that all websites will one day be responsive, and this would be the case today if it were not for two reasons.

The first reason is that creating a responsive website that is bug free and works every time is harder than it seems. It is easier now that HTML5 exists and now that web designers have had time to practice, but the fact is it is still difficult.

The second reason is to do with SEO (Search Engine Optimization). There are differences when it comes to optimizing a mobile website and a desktop website and as long as those differences exist then it is going to be slightly more beneficial to have a separate mobile website and a separate desktop website.

The future in general

It is hard to predict how responsive design is going to affect anything when technology is moving so quickly. There is a feeling that technology is slowing down and that it is now becoming a case of things getting marginally smaller or marginally faster as oppose to the larger leaps that current generations have seen. This is amplified by the fact that the two biggest next-gen gaming devices known as the Xbox One and Playstation 4 are almost identical in their technological makeup, which suggests that technology has reached a certain peak.

But, if you look at the pattern of technological improvement over the years then it is easy to see why some people think that the Internet may be obsolete in as few as seven years. There is a feeling that it will be replaced by something else, and even though this seems implausible, you have to remember that broadband used to seem implausible, not to mention wireless and mobile broadband being implausible not so long ago.

How is this going to affect WordPress themes?

The WordPress themes are templates for websites and it seems that if the world is going to continue turning responsive, then there are going to be more responsive web designs on the market. It is also possible that Google will come up with a way that responsive websites may be just as search engine friendly as having two websites (one mobile and one desktop). It also seems plausible that even if Google does not make this change that someone is going to find a way of making responsive websites both mobile search engine friendly and desktop search engine friendly.

This theory is based on the fact that WordPress is very popular and popular things have programmers working on them night and day. The same is true of hackers, and the thing about this type of programmer is that they will find a way. This again suggests that responsive websites are going to be more and more popular and that we are going to see more responsive WordPress themes as time goes on.
